Harvey Richards’ civil rights videos document civil rights activists in the early 1960s. Beginning in 1963, Richards cameras recorded the rising tide of public sentiment in favor of ending segregation. In the winter of that year, he took his cameras into the dangerous Mississippi delta to help Amzie Moore and the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in their voter registration drive. “We’ll Never Turn Back” and “Freedom Bound” videos were the results. Returning to San Francisco, he filmed the May 26, 1963 Freedom March of 15,000 people down Market Street in support of the Birmingham, Alabama movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1964, he returned to Mississippi and joined Amzie Moore again in making a second film on the voter registration drive entitled “Dream Deferred.” Back in the Bay Area in 1965, he films many civil rights demonstrations including the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley where students stuck the campus to preserve the right to raise funds for the civil rights movement. He collected this footage in his film “Decision in the Streets.” All are now available on Amazon Prime.

While filming, Richards also shot many black and white and color photos of civil rights demonstrations and related subjects. The Harvey Richards Media Archive contains four civil rights photo image galleries. The four galleries are Images of a Segregated Society, Mississippi 1959-1964, Bay Area Civil Rights 1960s Images, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement Activists, and Mississippi 1959 Image Gallery.
