Vietnam Day Committee October 1965 March

The Berkeley Vietnam Day Committee (VDC) held two marches to protest the Vietnam war in 1965, one in October and the second in November. This post presents photo images gallery from the Vietnam Day Committee October first march to the Oakland border.

In October, 1965, students on the University of California at Berkeley campus organized to protest the Vietnam war as part of the International Days of Protest occurring nationally around the U.S on October 15 and 16.  Many groups united in the Vietnam Day Committee (VDC) to conduct teach-ins, rallies and then to march to the Oakland Army Base to urge soldiers to refuse to go to war.

Teach-ins took place on many campuses around the country beginning in May, 1965. When school opened in the fall of 1965, anti-war activities resumed. The first VDC march was stopped at the Berkeley/Oakland border by a line of police. Harvey Richards photographs of the march and confrontation are in the gallery below.  Film of the march and confrontation is part of his documentary “Hot Damn!” (1965)
