Valerie Haynes Perry Interview: Heart Strong 2014 PEN Award
Heart Strong interview
This Heart Strong interview aired on KPFA 94.1 fm program Open Book/Poet to Poet of November 5, 2014 about Nina’s book, Heart Strong, Selected Poems 2000-2012, winner of the 2014 PEN Award, the Josephine Miles Award for Literary Excellence.
“The PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Awards were created twenty years ago to honor writers of exceptional works often not acknowledged by the mainstream literary community. Judged by respected writers, the awards honor books published the previous year that both reflect a multi-cultural or marginalized viewpoint and represent the highest standards of literature.” John Curl, Vice President, PEN Oakland Board.
Valerie Haynes Perry, novelist, editor and writing consultant, and Paul Richards, Estuary Press publisher, join Nina in conversation about Nina’s latest book, Heart Strong, Selected Poems 2000-2012. They review her poetry writing process and the work of Paul as the indie publisher dealing with the artistic and technical challenges of creating poetry eBooks and print books. Valerie proof read Heart Strong on its way to publication and adds her literary insights. Nina reads her poem “Autumn” in the broadcast.
The 2014 PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Award will be presented December 6, 2014, 1-4 PM at the Rockridge branch of the Oakland Library.
Heart Strong is available as a paperback book and eBook.
