Nina Serrano at Lunada Literary Lounge
October 8, 2014
Tribute to Ralph Maradiaga
On October 8, 2014 Nina Serrano participated in the Lunada Literary Lounge at the Galería de la Raza in San Francisco. She talked about Ralph Maradiaga and read her poem to him “Blessed Be” from her book Heart’s Journey, Selected Poems 1980-1999.
The Lunada Literary Lounge happened during this month’s full moon, at Galeria de la Raza on 24th and Bryant in San Francisco. Poet and musician Sandra Garcia Rivera is the curator of the series. Nina’s poem about the co-founder of the Galeria de la Raza, artist and filmmaker, Ralph Maradiaga coincided with a commemorative exhibit of his work on display there now, curated by Dr. Amalia Mesa-Bains, foremost Chicana artist and art historians. The October 8th reading was part of the 15th year of Lunada’s existence. Nina will also be a Madrina (Godmother) to help celebrate the upcoming Quincinera party for Lunada in April, 2015.
In the Quinceañera tradition, throughout the year, the Lunada features Madrinas and Padrinos: artists and leaders who, through poetry, song, film, and narrative, reflect the creative and artistic spirit of the Lunada, a poetry lounge event that began fifteen years ago in San Jose, created by Marc Pinate. Five years ago it moved to San Francisco to the Galeria de la Raza where it happily lives today.
